Tell us about your business! What inspired you to start this journey?
Kayne: “Great Shot Tennis was established by coach Kayne Ryan in August 2018. Since GST Academy has seen unbelievable improvements from their students – we teach both adults and kids!
Great Shot started as Kayne’s passion for tennis coaching grew after finishing on the professional Tennis Circuit and moved to Hong Kong. Kayne wanted to make sure that every student that jumps out on court with him improves every lesson and has the opportunity of reaching their highest potential – whether that is beating their friends in their next social game, heading to college or representing Hong Kong.”
Tell us about your journey as an entrepreneur
“[This is now my full time gig.] I was super fortunate enough to have some great Bosses / Mentors in Australia (all of which I still call and chat to every few months.)
They let me spread my wings without feeling like I was under constant viewing or restraint. I came up with many positive ideas for them which they could see as value for their business, whether on a small or large scale. I gave 100% every day I worked for them and they rewarded me with freedom to create new things and build their business. Some things worked well, some things didn’t – at the end of the day they saw how much I cared and appreciated the role, [and] they were happy to keep pushing my new ideas.”
Finding a great boss is more important than finding a company! Can you share the biggest challenge you faced so far?
“Starting in 2018 was interesting to say the least. Having faced covid and everything the pandemic threw at us as an industry was really tough! There were weeks and even months where courts were closed meaning no lessons could be conducted!”
What's something important you learnt along the way?
“Adapt with the times! Both on and off the court. Our students improving over the 3 year period since our inception has meant the knowledge we are able to pass over to our students has grown! Whilst the pandemic has forced us to rethink where lessons can be conducted.”
How do you stand out from your competitors?
“Great Shots’ method has had proven success across all ages and abilities. Why? It all comes down to the way our coaches approach their lessons. Tennis is one of the most technical sports in the world, and our wonderful coaching team led by Kayne Ryan makes learning the technical aspect of the game not only incredibly easy but fun.“
Can you share a tip with us for people who are on their entrepreneurial journey?
“Take Risks. You will never know the outcome unless you try.”
